Bonzano, Castello di Uviglie
Bonzano (AKA Castello di Uviglie)
Nestled among the hills of Rosignano Monferrato (AL), Bonzano/Castello di Uviglie stands as one of the oldest and most prestigious wine estates in Piedmont, boasting a winemaking tradition dating back to the distant year of 1491. However, the modern winery was founded in 1869, marking the beginning of a new era in the production of high-quality wines.
In 2020, the renowned Bonzano family took the reins of the estate along with the celebrated winemaker and scientist Donato Lanati, creating a partnership destined to revolutionize the local wine scene. Together, they completely renovated the cellar and crafted wines that capture the essence of Monferrato even more profoundly, using native grape varieties such as Barbera, Grignolino, and Albarossa alongside international inspirations donated by Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Sauvignon Blanc.
With 45 hectares of vineyards and a production entirely sustainable, with dual SQNPI and EQUALITAS certifications, Castello di Uviglie is committed to completely self-sufficient production and maintains an exceptionally high standard in vineyard and cellar management.
A distinctive feature of Castello di Uviglie is its tradition in producing Metodo Classico sparkling wines. The "Le Cave" line includes sparkling wines refined in underground quarries that span an area of 10,000 square meters. These "Cave in Pietra da Cantoni" have been excavated since the 8th century AD within a seabed that dates back over 18 million years. This white marl stone not only cradles the roots of the vineyards but has also played a significant role in shaping the urban landscape of Monferrato.
Among the most celebrated wines, the standout is the "Le Cave" Superior Barbera and the Monferrato Rosso "Hosteria". This aromatic blend of Pinot Noir and Barbera takes its name from the place that, throughout the twentieth century, symbolized the most authentic hospitality: the inn. "Hosteria" embodies the convivial and welcoming spirit of these ancient traditions, offering a refined and measured tasting experience, designed to please connoisseurs and novices alike. With the rich freshness of Barbera and the aromatic elegance of Pinot Noir, it enhances in a complementary and harmonious way the characteristics of Monferrato.
With such a rich history and a commitment to winemaking excellence, Castello di Uviglie continues to embody the essence of Piedmont, offering wines that are a tribute to the timeless tradition and beauty of the region. Francesca, Davide, Stefano, and the entire Bonzano family await you at the winery to show you the wonders of the territory and their work.
