Chateau Haut Lagrange, Ghislain Boutemy
Château Haut-Lagrange is a winery created in 1989 by Francis Boutemy on a very good “terroir” formerly planted with vines.
It is located on the outskirts of Bordeaux in Léognan in the heart of the prestigious Pessac-Léognan appellation, just next door to several Graves Crus Classés.
Francis Boutemy and his son Ghislain set up traditional culture methods with an innovating equipment.
With a density of 7,700 vines per hectare (2.5 acres), the soil is cultivated in a traditional way, ploughed in winter. Superficial farming starts in the spring. The soil is partially grassed over in order to control the vine’s growth. The manure is of vegetable organic origin. Yields are controlled depending on the vintage, by early removal of green fruit.
The harvest is manual and a careful selection of the best fruits is carried out in the vineyard. An autoengine worked out in Haut-Lagrange allows the grape-pickers to be sat, and the grapes are immediately selected on a sorting table on the top of the autoengine.
These winemaking methods lead to very authentic Pessac-Léognan wines.
Our white wines (50% Sauvignon, 50% Sémillon) combine freshness, fineness, balance and harmony with a touch of exotic fruits in the end. After a couple of years in the bottle, our wines show complexity, hints of honey and linden while keeping their freshness.
In our red wines (45% Merlot, 55% Cabernet Sauvignon), the fruity flavor remains dominant vintage after vintage, with a smooth attack, fineness, harmony, balance and an elegant finale. Although aged in barrels, oak is never dominant and leaves room for the fruit and fineness.
This new estate was created in 1989 by M. Boutemy, who is proof of ingeniosity of which there is no equal; inventor of the machine to pick grapes as if by hand, he would not hesitate to block up his pool for a refining station!...His wines are full of character, each vintage more profound than the previous. Finesse and a fabulous balance are assets of this promising vineyard. The whole team works every day to produce wines of excellent quality, while at the same time respecting people and the environment. The Terra Vitis and HVE certification is an attestation of their eco-responsible approach.
