Mas des Flauzieres, Jerome Benoit
Story
Mas des Flauzières is a former medieval farm that belong to Château d’Entrechaux. This building is located at the feet of Mont Ventoux next to Vaison-la-Romaine. The Benoît Family purchased it over a century ago in 1919. They farmed polyculture and produced grapes they sold to the cooperative.
After graduating from agronomic engineering and oenology, experiencing the production of wine in California for 9 month, Jérôme Benoît took over the estate and decided to build in 2002 his vinification chai in order to bottle and sell his wines. He now owns parcels in Gigondas, Seguret, Vacqueyras, Ventoux and Côtes du Rhône villages. This allows him to offer a wide range of wine terroirs sensitive: from lush easy drinking Ventoux to highly complex and structured Gigondas.
Philosophie
Mas des Flauzieres is certified HVE. Jerome dedicates his work to apply sustainable farming techniques. His vineyard is set up in a way that different local indigenous plants and wildlife prevent any natural issue: it is called biodiversity. He lets grass on one row of two to let the vines grow their roots deeper rather than shallow. His intervention are not systematic and the natural wind Mistral helps making natural and eco-friendly wine. He defines his work to mostly work by hand at key stage such as pruning, trimming and disbudding. That is were you optimize what nature offers. Jerome always look for optimal quality and maturity of the fruit and that delivers 95% of the success of a wine.
Estate
The vinyard is located in the Ouveze valley, next to Gigondas, Carpentras and Avignon. Terroirs are sand and rocks with a wide variety of limestone and minerals. All of them placed at the base of Mont Ventoux.
